Business and Life

Although it may seem we have been neglecting things of late that is far from the truth. Business and life has continued all be it a little quieter due to changes within the family that have slowed down some of our more ambitious plans, we are still working hard and will be posting increased updates and launching our creative director JamesC’s website very soon having secured a new domain tailored to his working plans.

We are very much on top of the work we have and arranging some very important meetings that will lead to a series of collaborations within the film and commercial sphere and JamesC will be working closely with the Sons of Adonis line on ad campaigns with other new elements being discussed for the future of the brand, in the meantime we are working with JamesC on the ad campaign for the range and in particular the sample kit that we will be blogging about soon.

There is also a real push with artist Stewart Nicol Soutar on the commercial that will see our team and in particular JamesC, working on ad campaigns and additional merchandising projects that have been discussed for the new year.

In summary, there is so much more to the business that we are building slowly and this is giving JamesC in particular, a much needed boost after the last few months where the focus and energy has been inward rather than outward.

Introducing The Talented H.G. Whaley

Something we are passionate about at Lost Creatives is talking to actors and creatives from across the media spectrum, and H.G.Whaley is a prime example of why. Passionate about his craft and building a name for himself on social media we wanted to get a little more insight into the man behind the posts.

Can you start with a little introduction to who you are and what you do?

I’m H.G. Whaley, an actor hailing from Wales, with a second base in London. As I approach my eighteenth birthday this September, it’s a time of reflection on a journey shaped by a deep and enduring passion for acting. My love for the craft began early, with school productions sparking a fire that has only grown over the years. From those first performances to more complex stage roles, I've dedicated myself wholeheartedly to this path.

You have been really active on social media sharing your photos and monologues to promote yourself, tell us more about what motivates your marketing technique?

My commitment to the craft extends beyond just performing—I’ve been relentless in promoting myself and continuously honing my skills. This dedication has led to some incredible opportunities, the most recent being a named role in the BBC production *Mammoth*. Although it was only a small part, landing this role feels like a significant milestone, a testament to the hard work and perseverance that have brought me to this point in my career, but I still look at this as just the start.

As I look ahead, I’m excited to see where this journey will take me next, always striving to push my boundaries and reach new heights in the world of acting.

I’m constantly creating, writing, filming, and starring in my own monologues, which I share across various social media platforms. Some of these pieces have garnered a few thousand views, which has been incredibly encouraging. I believe that consistent self-promotion is key in this industry, so I make it a point to post as often as possible. The more you put yourself out there, the better your chances of being noticed.

While I focus on acting-related content, I also try to share posts that resonate with a broader audience. Staying socially active and relatable is essential to building a strong connection with my followers.

One of the things we have noticed in your posts on social media is your developing scripts, what genre is your favourite and why?

Sci-fi and fantasy are definitely my favorite genres. I'm drawn to the imaginative possibilities and the way these stories can transport you to entirely different worlds. Films like *Back to the Future* and *Star Wars* have had a huge influence on me, and I'm also a big fan of *Red Dwarf* and *Doctor Who* on the BBC. 

Recently, I wrote a script titled *Spook In*. It’s still in development, but I see a lot of potential in it, whether as a TV series or a feature film. Although I’m relatively new to scriptwriting and know the script needs more refinement, I’m excited about where it could go. The biggest challenge is finding the time to really dive into it and perfect it.

When I write, I always imagine myself either as the main character or as an observer within the story. This approach helps me fully immerse myself in the process, allowing me to create more authentic and compelling narratives. I believe that by putting myself in the character's shoes, I can bring a deeper level of commitment and energy to the story.

Your obviously passionate about what you do and using every resource available to you to promote yourself, what advice would you give to other people in your position who are starting out? 

The advice I would give to anyone starting out is simple: *never give up*. The path can be tough, and there are moments when it’s tempting to throw in the towel, but you never know what opportunities are just around the corner. I’m still pushing forward, always looking ahead, and refusing to take a step back.

Acting is anything but easy. It’s demanding, and staying motivated can be a real challenge. That’s why I’ve adopted a new mantra: *Don’t be lazy.* Every day, I remind myself of this. If I stop or sit down for too long, I could miss out on something important. It’s essential to keep moving forward, no matter what.

That said, it’s equally important to take care of your mental health. Acting can be all-consuming, so it’s crucial to take breaks, go out with friends, and allow yourself to recharge. If things start to feel overwhelming, don’t hesitate to step back for a moment. You can still stay active in promoting yourself even when you’re out enjoying life. A quick selfie with friends can easily be turned into a post that keeps you visible without missing out on the fun. Balance is key—keep pushing forward, but don’t forget to take care of yourself along the way.

Dark Forest: A Cinematic Short

Cinema started with the short film and it has been a long tradition of movie makers to take this process and work to create something fresh, a story that is strong enough to stand on its own and convey a message in a short amount of time, Nevis Studios is now stepping into that arena with their new crowdfund project: Dark Forest.

Introducing Screaming Unicorn Productions

In the current content hungry world we find ourselves talking to Screaming Unicorn Productions, based in Glasgow, and making films for the world, they have already garnered numerous festival accolades for their short horror films and quest to bring cinematic projects to a worldwide audience.

Indie Film Thoughts

There is a lot of concern at the moment with the BBC daytime drama Doctors being cancelled, it was a mainstream way for people to gain a foothold in the industry and seen as a staple of daytime TV for many. People are naturally, wondering what this means for those entering the media market from the cast side to crew.

Changes to the market are always difficult to navigate and people are now looking for alternative avenues within the mainstream but overlooking the potential of commercializing ideas in the indie sector and utilizing avenues that are already in place such as HOD TV and the fantastic New Village Video whose platform is focused on the indies and the classic old school “straight to video” movies or the more familiar “streaming service original.”

Talks are underway for collective motion to pull new and emerging talent into pools and building something fresh. What this means is the indie scene has an opportunity to build a new network, a new platform and create.

Reaching Out in 2023

As we are in the first week of a new year, the lost creatives team has been making really positive moves and reaching out to not just new people but spending time talking to old friends in the realm of photography to discuss potential studio and location shoots.

With our first official telephone meeting of the year now done, we are very excited by the potential of what is being proposed and can start really taking stock with a view to moving our own brand forward.

New in the mix is creative director Jamesc, who wants to do not just horror based shoots but go back to freestyle painting (inspired by the amazing makeup artist Linda Mason) for editorial and showcase once again, his creative talents.

Over the coming weeks we will be releasing more news and updates including interviews with actors, producers and other creative talent.

Talking Books and Films With Ivan Peric

Over at The Lost Creatives, we are big fans of Ivan Peric and his book on filmmaking, taken from his own experiences and offering a solid plan for making and selling your work that resonates with our team. We are extremely thankful that he took some time out of his schedule to talk to us and open up about what he has been doing since the launch of “Don’t F*ck Up Your No Budget Movie!”

You are returning from a break after the release of your successful and lauded book “Don’t F*ck Up Your No-Budget Movie!” What have you been doing in that time that you can share with us?

Thanks for this question as it touches upon something that we don't often hear about, and that's taking ''breaks". Taking the time to not do anything and just relax. You scroll down your social media feed and all you see are people pushing the ''hustle'' and "grind'' lifestyle, it's rare you see someone talking about taking it easy and pacing yourself.

“The reality is that everyone needs to take breaks every once in a while in order not to burn out. This is especially true for us artists and digital creators.”

Most of us have full-time jobs and families, so all the extra work we put into our projects ends up taking a toll on our bodies. Just like any car, it doesn't matter if you use it for work or leisure, the mileage always accumulates. So that's what I did, I just took a break from it all, acting, writing, producing...My agent was sending me auditions and I just couldn't get myself to do them. I was physically and mentally drained.

I had written DFYNBM during the pandemic, the editing process was a lot of work and a lot of back and forth with the editors, then the publisher released it pretty quickly so I had to be on my toes and start promoting it right away.

With the uncertainties of the pandemic, everyday life at work, and writing this book, I never got to take a step back and refocus. After a few months ''off'', I now feel great and motivated to continue working on my plans for this book and other projects!

You have spoken quite openly about how your workflow has changed thanks to your experiences in filmmaking, taking you from actor to director/producer to give you control over your projects, how has this affected your style as an actor overall, and is it a method you would recommend?

Yes, I would definitely recommend any actor to pick up a camera and produce something themselves! It's the best experience and you get to see through the eyes of a producer and director. For me, understanding the process gave me much more confidence as an actor.

Once you get to understand how things work, you put much less pressure on yourself. Most young actors are very self-conscious, always wondering what everyone on set thinks of their performance. I was like that, always looking for that validation. By becoming a director yourself, you get to understand that performing is not that complicated and it often doesn't take that much of a ''performance'' as some actors might think.

It definitely grounded my acting style. Every subtle moment is blown up by 1000% on the screen, so it made me understand that less is more because the camera catches everything. You also get to understand the point of view of the director much more.

I remember being a young actor and being devastated by any notes a director would give me after a take. I would take it personally and couldn't understand why the director didn't like my performance. But the truth was that the director never disliked my performance, he just wanted to see something different and push me as an artist. Producing also makes you appreciate every single person on set. You see and understand that everyone has an important role in a production. You just respect everyone more, and out of that respect comes better performances because you want to contribute as best as you can to the project.

What is next for you in the creative arena? Do you have any new projects planned? Will
you be taking your method on the road and teaching the Ivan Peric method of filmmaking?

Every time I come back from a break I want to do it all! I feel inspired to act, write and produce! But I know I will have to focus on one thing at a time. I wasn't 100% satisfied with my book launch as it was rushed by the publisher and I didn't have much time to market it before I had to take a break. So the first thing on my list is to continue to push my book and get it out there to as many people as possible. Yes, one of the ways I will be doing this is by starting workshops for aspiring filmmakers. I would love to have seminars all around the world and inspire others to start making their own movies.

My main goal with DFYNBM was to inspire people who might not have a big budget, or any budget at all, to produce their own feature films. I believe these seminars can complement the book very well by being not only inspiring but also informative and entertaining.

I have so many stories and anecdotes I would love to share that didn't end up in the book! I will start locally here in Montreal, then hopefully expand to the rest of Canada and the US. The next goal after that would be to go overseas! I will also slowly get back into acting. I already have a few auditions lined up that seem like fun. There are also some unfinished scripts I'd like to work on and hopefully produce.

What advice would you offer anyone entering the film or TV arena as an actor, producer, or director?

Make sure you are getting into it because you absolutely love it. Don't do it for some kind of fame or fortune because there is a 99.9% chance you won't get it. Do it from your heart and not your ego. Take classes/workshops, and learn as much about your craft as you can. Watch a lot of movies and shows!

There is a lot of great content out there and so many outlets where you can expose your work. There is no excuse these days, the technology is affordable and platforms are always looking for fresh ideas. Finally, just do it! Pick up your digital camera or iPhone and just go out there and shoot. If you're an actor, record yourself doing scenes or shoot skits to keep yourself sharp, and never give up!

Monsteer Artistry Brings Their Vision To The Stage

One of the best places to earn your craft as an actor, director, or crew has always been the stage, and Monsteer Artistry has taken this notion and run with their new play “The Feeling” which debuts at the Union Theater London on the 8th of September.

Patricia Jones: An Actors Journey

Patricia Jones has created a stellar career as an actor and is now the author of the book Opening Doors for Working Class Actors.  We wanted to gain a little more insight into the career, and thoughts of this stellar actress and how she came to be where she is. 

can you tell us more about yourself and your career path as an actress?  

I always knew that I wanted to be an actor from a very early age so in a way it was easy for me to know where I wanted to be. I didn’t go to drama school due to lack of funding which was in grant form at that time but started to chart a career for myself in fringe and small-scale productions in London in order to build a cv for myself. I eventually landed some good theatre work and then was offered a regular role in the TV series ‘Byker Grove’ where I stayed for four years. This was an amazing opportunity to learn my craft and to meet many different directors who I subsequently worked with again on various shows and this was how I began to build a television career. I took a break when I hit my forties thinking that work was getting scarce but returned 10 years later and started again. I think that if I had my time again I wouldn’t have taken that break. I am not sure I believe it is true about actresses getting less work as they age. I think you just have to stick with it. Stay at the top of your game and be patient. Things are beginning to change slowly and it’s important to give a voice to the stories of older women.

You have worked a wide range of roles over the years, and secured some interesting parts, would you say the industry has changed over the years and if so how? 

In a way, I think the industry is much more open now. With the advent of online casting sites and workshops for actors there is much more opportunity to be present, practice your craft and meet casting directors and agents. We are learning to take more care of our health and wellbeing as artists which is hugely important and didn’t exist at all when I was starting out. Social media platforms can offer access to casting information to everyone regardless of training and makes the industry more accessible to those starting out. Casting Directors are now more accessible too. Back in the day, there was the idea that they were gatekeepers in ivory towers but that is changing too now. This is not an easy profession for sure, but if you run yourself like a business, stay in touch with what is going on, and take action to promote yourself, it is not impossible to create a career. Staying positive and having an interest outside of the business is essential. Purely defining yourself through acting is not healthy or helpful. Finally, stick with it. This has always been the case and always will be so get ready for the long haul. Enjoy it and if you stop doing so, get out and do something else. The going can get tough so you need to love what you are doing.

Your new book Opening Doors for Working Class Actors touches on your own journey but also looks at alternative paths to entry into the industry, what was the impetus for you writing the book, and what is your plan for the future? 

The book came out of the lockdown and the online workshops I attended during that time. Casting directors and agents were really open and helpful and I noticed a lot of the same questions coming through time after time about headshots, showreels, self-tapes, etc and I thought, why not put all this together in one place for those starting out? Although the title aims the book at working-class actors it is in fact for anyone who wants to enter the industry and doesn’t necessarily have the financial resources to go to a traditional drama school. The idea for it, going forward, is that it will be updated on an annual basis with new courses, workshops, and information. I am in contact with organizations throughout the UK with the intention of keeping the book relevant and useful.

Is there a role in film/TV/theater you would love to tackle as an actress?  Is there a particular genre you would like to enter into from a purely acting stance?  

I can’t say that there is a particular role I am desperate to play but I would like to be seen as a vital part of the stories and representation of older women in theatre and television. There is a wealth of untapped experience to draw from here and I would very much like to be part of that narrative.

There has been a push to get more working-class people into actors but with that, there has been little to no attempt at providing any information or support, which is why we at the lost creatives were very happy to be able to talk to Patricia Jones, a working actress of note, and the author of the book “Opening Doors for Working-Class Actors.”

Finding Solutions

Finding solutions is a big part of the work we do, from our creative consultation work with the Sons of Adonis brand to blogging about shows, The Lost Creatives was built around that concept and we are truly grateful to the people around us, in the last few days our dear friend Keziah Nyam-jim who has been bringing her immense talents in the business world to the table and supporting our changes with some advice, gentle nudges, and more than a few laughs in the process, she has been talking us through options that we would otherwise have missed.

What this means, is we have a much clearer end goal and thanks to Keziah, a timetable to work to, and someone outside of the creative world we live in who is going to give us a critical eye that is much needed looking over the work and plans. Something that we highly recommend.

There are also updates we know are coming to the vshowcards site which will make a huge impact on how we work, and open up doors to projects for many people in the arts and media that will be a gamechanger. Travel and Meeting Contacts Featuring vShowcards

We are really pleased when people reach out, especially when our contacts who have taken time off, come to us to talk about working on something fresh which has been happening a lot recently especially with photographers and a few actors who feel that the time is right to start working on smaller projects to stretch their muscles a little after the uncertainty of the last two years.

Naturally, this has given us the impetus to think a little more deeply about concepts and start stockpiling items that may seem strange but will in the long term be of advantage to us, such as the mix of ready-made prosthetics, butterflies, and other items that would on the surface seem strange.

In addition to this, we are planning a trip to London, part buyers trip and part meet up with friends, although the timing for this has been a little tricky due to family commitments, there are advantages to this that aside from being able to shop, we can discuss plans with the team at vShowcards gaining further insight their upcoming changes (which look to be amazing), our creative director JamesC is already a member which is another reason we want to sit with them and work out some details and add to his profile with strategic work.

What we are planning for is trips to the major makeup retailers, meeting with clients/friends, then returning to Scotland to work on additions to the sites across the board. There is something to be said for this plan that goes beyond the obvious networking, it really is about finding new sources of inspiration on route.

The scope and potential of this trip should be interesting and be a welcome break from the background work we have been doing.

What this book focuses on is taking the art, and the commercial, combining the two, and producing work that will be a showcase of your talents and commercially viable.

What is really refreshing about “Don't F*ck Your No-Budget Movie” is the candor with which Ivan approaches the process, he openly talks about how hard it was to make things happen and why, giving a first-hand view of what he did, how he achieved it and what pitfalls he faced in the journey.

As a team, we can see the value in this book and fully endorse it, our team has worked behind and in front of the camera for over 20 years and we decided that we wanted to focus our energy on producing for ourselves which we had a broad idea of what was involved from previous work, however, taking that knowledge (along with our contacts in distribution, casting, etc), alongside the stellar advice offered by Ivan Peric in his book, we can clearly create a path that will reduce the process of creating a TV or film project and streamline it making it a much more cohesive journey. *It is worth noting even with the experience we have it is always good to source additional information and add to the arsenal of information we have in our pocket, which this book did by verifying our thought processes and giving a clear and concise plan that filled in certain gaps in our knowledge.

Volunteer Positions At House Of iKons Fashion Show 2022

With fashion week coming this February, there are opportunities to be a part of the scene coming up and The House of iKons is a star of fashion week that is a CV booster, and a chance to learn from some of the best within the industry, to support designers from across the globe, and being a part of fashion history.

As one of the top six worldwide, off-schedule fashion events, House of iKons is a show that has built from the ground up a leading fashion event during LFW, and gives backstage crew, designers, and press the chance to earn their craft on a global platform.

Christmas Consultations and Other Business

The Christmas season (and by extension New Year) is always interesting for the Lost Creatives team. Our creative director JamesC has been working with a few regular faces pre-show in a private capacity to plan out makeup for the stellar talent Alex Robertson, currently appearing as Dame at the Falkirk Town Hall, alongside his usual work with brands.

As an old friend of the company Alex Robertson has been a supporter and a real boost to our morale, and to have him come to JamesC for advice was a genuine pleasure, he is not only an exceptional talent on stage but a respected character actor for a wide range of TV shows, indie films, and much more, so to be able to support him was a real pleasure and in truth a running laugh as he is a comical person to be around with self-deprecating humor that always makes us laugh out loud. On top of this, we have been doing other types of consult work from PR advice to script work breaking down the financials (in basic form) to help a few indie projects that were stuck with a few minor details. We are incredibly proud of the work we do and appreciate that people see us as a viable source of information and of course promotion for their projects.

In the New Year, we are going to be taking some calculated risks and going public with our work which till now has been for clients and we have had to sign waivers preventing us from showcasing the work, frustrating but nonetheless important for our growth as a team and a company.

While we finish off some of the background work we have before we close for a few days of well-earned rest, we wish all our followers and everyone in the media industry a Merry Christmas, we look forward to coming back in the New Year with more news and updates.

Project Development With The Team Behind The Memento Mori Portrait film

With an important and historical message, the short Memento Mori Portrait film is tackling a heartbreaking moment in Western history and bringing it to a wider audience.  

Having already won 7 awards for the script, the film itself is a love story with a twist, looking at the voices of those left behind and mixing in science fiction, imagination, and memory to create a beautifully sculpted narrative that takes the Holocaust and gives voice to the people who were lost with, the pink triangle badge, being the symbol of their shame and degradation.

An excellent team of filmmakers are already behind the project with accolades across genres and a collective CV of note, this film is a project designed to showcase their work, the story being part of a larger tapestry, it is a moment in time that is important to highlight and a story that deserves to be heard. 

The importance of the message this film creates is part of the reason it is being made and shows that there is still a long way to go with certain rights in the global narrative.
